United States President Joe Biden seemed to take help from an honour guard at a wreath-laying ceremony in Arlington in Texas. A video showed him taking directions from the guard as he placed a large floral arrangement on a stand during the ceremony on Veterans Day.
The clip drew sharp reactions from people on social media, with most of them calling Joe Biden “confused”, “disoriented” or “befuddled”.
After placing the flower arrangement, Biden was seen making a cross sign. Soon after, he took a step back and turned around. However, after looking around for a while, he turned back towards the honour guard he had sought help from.
Later, the military officer pointed to the direction where US Vice President Kamala Harris was standing. Following this, Biden turned around and stood next to her.
The video was widely shared online, as users claimed that Biden needed “assistance” from the honour guard on where to stand during the wreath-laying ceremony.
“Joe Biden, confused and befuddled after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, has to be guided back to his place by a white-gloved guard,” a user wrote on X.
“Biden suffers ANOTHER embarrassing gaffe as he stumbles through Veterans Day service and appears to get lost while laying a wreath,” said another user.
Members of the Republican Party in the US also took digs at the Democratic Party leader. “We have a president that doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going,” the New York Post quoted New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew as saying.
“Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, it does,” said Rep. Darrell Issa of California, the publication reported.
Joe Biden has often been the centre of such apparently awkward moments. In March 2022, Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian people as “Iranian” in his first State of Union address.
“Putin may circle Kyiv with tanks, but he’ll never gain the hearts and souls of the Iranian people,” Joe Biden seemingly said while urging everyone to put up a united front against Russian aggression.
Not many days later, he again landed in an awkward situation after he mistakenly referred to Kamala Harris as the ‘first lady’. He wanted to say that Doug Emhoff, US Vice President Kamala Harris’s husband, had contracted Covid-19.
However, he just ended up saying, “There’s been a little change in the arrangement of who is on the stage because of the first lady’s husband contracting Covid-19.”
In April last year, Biden was seen doing an ‘invisible handshake’ after ending a speech at a university in Greensboro, following which, he continued to roam around the podium looking confused.
The video was widely shared on social media back then. While one section of the internet was sympathetic to Biden, many pointed out that the whole incident was embarrassing.
